TikTok is a Chinese social media platform; Nepal announced on Monday that it would ban the platform due to its "negative effects" on social harmony. Rekha Sharma, Nepal's minister of communication and information technology, told news agency PTI that a cabinet meeting decided to forbid using TikTok.
TikTok has come under fire from a sizable segment of the Nepalese public, who claim the platform encourages hate speech. At least 1,647 instances of cybercrime have been reported on the app in the last four years.
Last week, representatives of the Chinese app, the home ministry, and the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police held a discussion. The decision to prohibit the platform will come into effect following the conclusion of the technical setup.
The minister from Nepal stated that the decision to close TikTok will be carried out following the establishment of a deadline. Gagan Thapa, general secretary of the Nepali Congress, criticized the government's decision to outlaw TikTok and suggested that it should instead regulate the platform.
Thapa wrote on the social media platform X, "The government's decision should be rectified as it violates individual freedom and freedom of expression."
Because of security concerns, TikTok has been outlawed in a number of nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and the European Union.
Following the border clash between Indian and Chinese forces in Galwan, India banned 59 mobile applications in 2020, the majority of which were of Chinese origin. One of the apps that was prohibited was TikTok, which Bloomberg claims had 200 million Indian users.
